How to Make a Packing List You Can Reuse for Every Trip

Stop rewriting your packing list before every trip. Build one master list by section, untick it for each trip, and keep it improving as you travel.

Most packing lists are written the night before a trip, from memory, and thrown away afterwards. Which is why the same things get forgotten every time: the charger, the adapter, the medication you only need when you are away. A reusable packing list fixes that by turning each trip’s lessons into a list that is better the next time.

1. Build one master list, by section

Start with everything you take on a typical trip and sort it into sections. Sections make a long list quick to scan and mirror how you actually pack: the documents pouch, the clothes, the wash bag, the cables.

  • Documents: passport or ID, tickets and bookings, travel insurance, wallet and cards.
  • Clothes: tops, trousers or shorts, underwear and socks, a light jacket, comfortable shoes, sleepwear, swimwear.
  • Toiletries: toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, sunscreen, medication, shampoo, hairbrush.
  • Electronics: phone charger, power bank, headphones, travel adapter.
  • Extras: reusable water bottle, snacks for the journey, sunglasses.

Write items once, without quantities. “T-shirts” is enough; how many depends on the trip, and you can decide that while you pack.

2. Add trip-type lists only when you need them

One master list covers most trips. If you regularly take a very different kind of trip, keep a second list for it rather than cramming everything into one. Common examples:

TripWhat it adds
Beach day or holidayBeach towels, sun hat, umbrella, waterproof phone pouch, cover-up, cooler with ice packs
Business tripOut-of-office reply, laptop and charger, presentation saved offline, business outfits, company card
CampingTent, sleeping bags and mats, camping stove and fuel, headlamps, first-aid kit, warm layers
Road tripTyre and fluid checks, driving licence and car papers, offline maps, phone mount and car charger

3. Before each trip: start fresh, then skip

A reusable list only works if it is clean when you open it. In Tickloop, a packing list is set to start fresh only when you tap, so it never resets in the middle of packing. A day or two before you leave, tap Start fresh: every item is unticked, and the previous trip is saved in Activity.

Then go through the list once and tick anything this trip does not need (no swimwear for a winter city break) so the unticked items are exactly what still has to go in the bag.

4. While packing: tick as it goes in, not as you think of it

Tick an item when it is physically in the bag, not when you have remembered it. Pack by section, so you only have to look at one part of the list at a time, and leave the last-minute items (phone charger, toothbrush, medication) at the end. If you share packing with someone, send them the list as text so each of you knows what is left.

5. After the trip: improve the list

This is the step that makes the list reusable rather than just repeated. The day you get back, while it is fresh:

  • Add everything you had to buy on the trip or wished you had taken.
  • Remove what came back unused twice in a row.
  • Move items that kept getting missed to the end of the list, where last-minute checks happen.

After three or four trips, the list reflects how you actually travel, and packing turns into a twenty-minute job instead of an evening of second-guessing.

Other lists that work the same way

Anything you prepare for more than once fits this pattern: the gym bag, the weekly shop, a school bag, a day out with a baby. Tickloop’s templates include Grocery Shopping, Baby Essentials and a School Checklist that starts fresh on weekdays. For the weekly version of the same habit, read the Sunday reset checklist.

Make it a list that starts fresh

Tickloop’s Travel Packing template has these 24 items in five sections, and there are Beach Trip, Business Trip, Road Trip, Camping and Vacation Prep templates too. Packing lists are set to start fresh only when you tap, so you untick the list right before the next trip and the last trip is saved in Activity.

Tickloop is free on iPhone and Android, with no account. See how it works.
